Virasami Ringadu ( ibid. வீரசாமி ரிங்காடு , Hindi सर वीरसम्य रिन्गदू , English Veerasamy Ringadoo , October 20, 1920 , Port Louis - September 9, 2000 ) - the last governor general of Mauritius from January 17, 1986 to March 12, 1992 , the first president of Mauritius from March 12, 1992 to June 30, 1992 .

Biography

Virasami Ringadu was born on October 20, 1920 in a Tamil family from India [1] . In 1937, he was one of the founders of the Tamil League [2] , and later founded the magazine Tamil Voice, whose purpose was primarily to publish the best examples of Tamil literature and the works of modern Tamil writers [3] .

He went to the UK . During his stay in London, he rented an apartment with Kocheril Raman Narayanan , the future president of India .

In the government of the Prime Minister, Sivusagur Ramgulama served as Minister of Finance of Mauritius, in 1975 Ringad was knighted [4] . On January 17, 1986, he took office as Governor General of Mauritius . In June 1986 he became a holder of the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George [5] .

On March 12, 1992, after the proclamation of the republic, Ringadou resigned as governor general, and on the same day became the first president of Mauritius . He held this post until June 30, 1992 , when he was replaced by the democratically elected Kassem Utim .

Memory

A bust of Virasami Ringado stands on La Place d'Armes, where the Government House is located, in Port Louis [6] .
