Battleships of the type America - two 74-gun battleships of the third rank , built for the Royal Navy based on the drawings of the French ship America , which was captured in 1794 and later renamed HMS Impetueux . America was a battleship of the Téméraire type , the most successful and most numerous type of French 74-gun ship. Both ships were ordered on June 10, 1795 and were built at the Deptford private shipyard in London. The ships of this type belonged to the so-called "ordinary 74-gun ships", since they carried 18-pound guns on the upper gun deck.
