Description

It is very similar to a forest swirl , however, the plumage is a little darker with a redder tint, the lower body is brownish-gray. [2]

Spread

Distributed in Japan and in the Sakhalin region of Russia . It is found up to about 51 ° N on Sakhalin , and on the Kuril Islands to the north to the island of Ketoy . [3]

Migrations

Sakhalin (surroundings of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk ): in spring, in the nesting biotopes on Mount Chekhov ( Susunai Ridge ), birds were found in mid-May, but in autumn, descending to the foot of the mountains, in the second decade of October. [4] Kunashir: in spring, migratory birds appeared from the third decade of April, and in the autumn migration were recorded from mid-October to mid-November. Habitats

Zavirushki populate alpine (subalpine) creeping thickets of cedar and alder elfin trees in combination with thickets of heather bushes and outcrops of rocky outcrops. On Sakhalin, habitats are located at an altitude of 1000 to 1600 m above sea level [4] , on Kunashir - on the slope of the Tyatya volcano - at an altitude of 900 - 1000 m. [5]

Nesting

Jacks . On Sakhalin, they were located in forks of cedar dwarf branches at a height of 0.5-1.5 m. In the outer layer, twigs of stone birch, blueberry and rhododendron are used, as well as dry leaves and stalks of bluegrass. The base of the nest is composed of leafy mosses (up to 80% of the total material), pieces of birch bark and overripe birch leaves are also used. The inner layer is made of dry pine needles and birch leaves. The tray (bottom and sides) are lined with black roots.

Masonry . In June. Consists of 3-4 blue-colored eggs. Dimensions: 20.0-20.5 x 15.3-16.0 mm. [2] [4]
