Rumlu ( azerb. Rumlu or Rumlu eli ) is one of the largest Kyzylbash tribes. The Rumlu tribe was among the first seven Turkic tribes of Anatolia and Azerbaijan, who accepted the teachings and power of the sheikhs of the Order of Sefeviye .
History
Unlike most nomadic and semi-nomadic Kyzylbash tribes, the Rumlu tribe was made up largely of various Turkoman clans and Oimaks who settled in the areas of Sivas and Amasia. Probably Shiism was prevalent among the Rumlu clans even before they adopted the teachings of the Safavid sheikhs. The tribe itself was also most likely organized already at the time when the Turkic Oimaks of Sivas and Amasya had already transferred to the service of the Safavids. At the place of their original residence, in the central part of Anatolia, the newly formed tribe was called Rumlu (from the word Rum - Rome in Eastern traditions). Rumlu, along with other seven Kyzylbash tribes, originally constituted the main striking force of the Safavid order. Natives of this tribe held high state and military posts in the Safavid state, being the "pillars of the state." The head of the tribe Div-Sultan Rumlu under Shah Ismail I , held the post of Amir al-Umar, that is, the commander-in-chief of the Kyzylbash army. The tribe was disbanded as a result of the reforms of Shah Abbas I , almost the entire composition, the tribe was included in the Shah Shahsevanov ’s guard.
