Biography
Born in Minneapolis in the family of Louis and Irma Ayrs. [4] When he was four years old, his parents divorced, after which he moved to San Diego with his mother and stepfather. [5] Having dropped out of school, Ayres founded his own musical group, with which he performed in Mexico for a month. After returning, he continued his career as a musician, playing the banjo and guitar in a number of big bands. During one of his performances in a nightclub, Ayres met an agent of one of the Hollywood movie studios, who offered him a contract for filming a movie.
His debut took place in 1929 in the film "Kiss" with Greta Garbo in the title role. The ensuing role in the military drama “ On the Western Front Without Change ” made Ayrs a star and secured a long-term contract in Hollywood . From 1938 to 1942, the actor played the role of Dr. Kildred in nine films about him, and in the early 1950s returned to this image in a series of radio shows.
During World War II, Ayres served in the U.S. Army, first as a first aid instructor, and then as an orderly and assistant chaplain in the Pacific . He donated all the money he earned over the years of service to the American Red Cross .
In 1948, Ayres became an Academy Award nominee for his lead role in Johnny Belinda . In the 1950s, the actor began to work more on television, where his productive career continued until the early 1990s. During this time, he appeared in dozens of television series and television films, including “Smoke from the trunk”, “ Colombo ”, “Streets of San Francisco”, “ Hotel ”, “ Private Detective Magnum ” and “Team“ A “”. Among the films of that time with his participation are such films as Vorotily (1964), Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973), Salem Vampires and Omen 2: Damien (1978).
Lew Ayrs was married three times: from 1931 to 1933 - to actress Lola Lane, from 1934 to 1940 - to actress Ginger Rogers , and from 1964 on her death - Diane Hall, who gave birth to his son Justin in 1968. He also had a short affair with actress Jane Wyman , because of which she divorced Ronald Reagan . The actor died on December 30, 1996, two days after his eighty-eighth birthday in Los Angeles . He was buried at Westwood Cemetery . His contribution to the film industry is marked by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
