Biography

Liviu Chepoy was born on April 25, 1969 in the village of Broshteni, Suceava County . He began to actively engage in luge at the age of six, at first he was trained at the Vatra Dornei sled club, then in 1988 he moved to Brasov , where he joined the local club. He made his international debut in 1990, at the European Championships in Austria, Eagles finished forties in single sleighs and twenty-second in doubles, while he was fifth in doubles at the Canadian World Championship in Calgary. A year later, at sixth place at the World Championships in Oberhof, Germany, he took sixth place, a year later he showed the eleventh time at the European Championship in Winterberg (in the future he decided to concentrate exclusively on doubles, since the results here were noticeably better than in singles). Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville - along with his partner Joan Apostol, he did not reach the prize positions, remaining fourth.

In 1993, Chepoy took sixth place at the World Championships in Calgary, the next season was fourth at the European Championships in German Königssee and placed on the sixth line of the World Cup overall standings. Later he qualified for the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer - together with the Apostle, they again approached the podium, but, like four years ago, were left without medals, finishing the performance in sixth position.

At the 1995 World Cup in the same Lillehammer, Chepa finished fifth, a year later he took seventh place at the European Championship in Latvia's Sigulda and eleventh at the World Championship in German Altenberg. In 1998, he closed the top ten at the European Championships in Oberhof, then went to the Nagano Olympic Games , where he, along with his new team-mate, Jon Cristjan Stanciu, arrived at the finish line sixteenth.

Since the competition in the Romanian team was quite strong, shortly after the Olympics, Liviu Chepoy decided to end his career as a sleigh rider. However, after some time he received an invitation from the Moldavian national team, moved there as a coach and a current athlete. As an athlete, he performed at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City , although he took only thirty-eighth place in uncharacteristic men's singles. As a coach, he brought to the Moldovan team the same Romanian legionnaire Bogdan Makovei , who subsequently represented Moldova at all major tournaments for many years and attended two Olympics.

In addition to luge, Chepoy also made a good career in politics. Back in 1996, he became a member of the National Liberal Party and then held various positions on the council of his native Suceava. In the period 2005-2006 he headed the National Sports Committee of Romania, at this post he mainly developed the infrastructure of winter sports in the country. Currently engaged in business related to the ski resort of Vatra Dornei, owns a chain of hotels and ski resorts. Married, son [1] Leonard stands for the national team of Moldova.
