Geography and Population

The area of the island is 248.1 km² [3] ; this is the 23rd largest island in Norway . The island is characterized by a mountainous landscape, there are several peaks with a height of over 900 m. The highest point is the Kjerringfjordfjellet mountain (960 m) [3] .

The administrative territory of the island belongs to three communes - Alte (the eastern part of the island), Hasviku (the western part) and Loppe (a small area in the south-west of the island).

The population of the island in 2001 was 93 people [3] , in 2012 - 80 people. Mostly it is saami fishing.

Economic Use

The island has a nepheline deposit (nepheline syenite ), its development in the town of Lillebukt began in 1961 by North Cape Minerals AS [3] (now the company is called ). According to the data for 2000, the annual extraction of nepheline was 330 thousand tons, most of which is exported as raw materials for the glass industry [4] .

In summer, the island is used by the Sami as pasture for herds of reindeer , which are ferried from island to island by ferry.

Sami Conflict

On the island, there has been a conflict for many years between the so-called “sea Sami” who live here fishing and the Sami living on the continent who annually use the island’s territory as a summer pasture for reindeer. Under Norwegian law, it is reindeer herding that is a protected occupation for Sámi as indigenous peoples , and Sámi reindeer herders plan to prohibit on the island any economic activity other than reindeer herding.
