Biography

Ivan Mikhailenko was born on November 3, 1901 in the village of Gavrilovka (now the Vyshgorod district of the Kiev region of Ukraine ). After graduating from elementary school, he worked in agriculture. In 1922 - 1924 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1941, Mikhailenko was again drafted into the army and in June of that year he was sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War. In the battles he was seriously wounded [1] .

By 1944, the Guard Lieutenant Ivan Mikhailenko commanded a platoon of the 133rd Guards Rifle Regiment of the 44th Guards Rifle Division of the 65th Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the forcing of Narew . The platoon Mikhailenko was one of the first to cross the river and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on its west bank, repelling six fierce counterattacks. At the critical moment of the battle, Mikhailenko caused the Soviet artillery to fire on himself, which allowed him to discard the enemy [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for the “courage and heroism shown when crossing the Narev River, holding the bridgehead and ensuring the crossing of his troops” of the Guard, Lieutenant Ivan Mikhailenko was awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal " Under the number 7112 [1] .

In 1946, Mikhailenko was sacked. He lived in Kiev , worked as a foreman at a Vinsovkhoz. He died on January 22, 1970 [1] .

He was also awarded the orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .

In honor of Mikhailenko a street was named in his native village [1] .
