Seiland

Sejland [1] [2] ( Norwegian Seiland , Sámi Sami. Sievju ) - an island in the north of Norway in the county (province) of Finnmark , located south (southeast) of the island of Sörøya , southwest of the island of Kvaløia and northeast of the island of Stjernoya ; separated from the mainland by the Vargsund Strait. By area ( 559 km² [3] ) it is the 14th island of Norway , and without the islands of the Svalbard archipelago - the eighth. Administratively, the island belongs to three communes - Hammerfest , Alte and Kvalsund .

Population

Archaeologists on the island found traces of material culture about 7 thousand years old.

According to 2013 data, the island's population was 147 people. In recent years, the island's population has declined significantly. Several fishing villages are abandoned [3] .

Geography, nature

The island is characterized by mountainous terrain. The island has two of the northernmost glaciers in Scandinavia - Nordmannsjøkelen and Seilandsjøkelen. The highest point of the island is Mount Seilandstuva (1078 meters) [3] .

The island is used as a summer pasture for reindeer [3] .

On a significant part of the island, the National Park with an area of 316 km² [3] was created in 2006.
