Jonah (Luanga)

Metropolitan John Luang ( born Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga ; July 18, 1945 , the village of Ddegey, Uganda ) is a bishop of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria , the elder metropolitan of Kampala , the impert and exarch of all Uganda .

Biography

Born July 18, 1945 [1] in Dedeea, in Uganda. He is the grandson of Obadiah Basajjakitalo, one of the founders of Orthodoxy in Uganda . According to his own recollections: “I grew up in the house of my grandfather, Obadiya. Of course, I often saw Fr. Spartas . These were very active people who cared a lot about others. Father Spartas was a born leader. He graduated from several classes of the school, and learned everything else himself. And my grandfather never went to school. He was self-taught ” [2] .

From 1952 to 1964 he received secondary education in Boulemezi and Caddonodo in Uganda. From 1965 to 1968 he studied at the seminary in Crete , and from 1968 to 1973 - at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens . From 1973 to 1978 he studied at the theological school of the University of Athens.

From 1979 to 1981, he was secretary of the Orthodox Mission in Uganda. May 1, 1981 ordained to the rank of deacon , and in 1982 - to the rank of presbyter .

After that, he served as dean of the Theological Seminary of Archbishop Macarius III in Nairobi for ten years [3] .

On July 26, 1992, in Nairobi, he was consecrated bishop of Bukobassky to manage a mission in Tanzania.

From 1992 to 1995 - the representative of Syndesmos in South Africa [1] .

On March 12, 1997 [4] [3] he was appointed Metropolitan of Kampalski , Iertimos and Exarch of all Uganda . In May of the same year, his intronization took place , led by Patriarch Peter VII [3] .

In December 2014, in his sermon for the Liturgy on the occasion of the feast of the Nativity of Christ in the Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Kampala said that the Orthodox Church must resist the spread of Islamic extremism in Africa. He called on Ugandan Christians to deepen their knowledge of Christian doctrine and to take a more active life position [5] .

On October 24, 2017, Pope and Patriarch Theodore II was granted the title of Elder Metropolitan [6] .
