Personal life

According to the family chronicle, “Engel was a smart man, his conversation, the courtesy of his treatment, the tone of his high society, his good manners made him many friends. But his lack of character ruined his state husband in him and did not allow him to be happy in his private life. Already in his mature years, he did not dare to marry, although between the best brides for him there could only be a difficulty in choosing. He was always content with metresses, from one of which, Ms. Friesel, had a daughter, Nadezhda, married to Baroness Rosen. All these connections were covered by a curtain of decency, until he became a victim of the first geta that came across ” [2] .

In 1808, Engel met Anna Karlovna Litke , the wife of a retired major of naval battalions, the Polish nobleman Adamovich. Because of her indecent behavior, this lady was known to many of the sailors when she lived with her husband in Kronstadt (Nicholas I wrote about Engel’s wife in one of his letters in 1831: “a well-known public b ...” [3] ). Their relationship lasted two years, like all the previous ones, but in 1810 Engel took her to his Petersburg house, where, together with her relatives, she took possession of everything there. Around 1820, she became his legal wife [4] , although no one knew when and where this marriage took place. Her daughter from her first marriage, Sofia Semenovna Adamovich, was married to R. F. Furman ; his son, Ivan Semenovich (1796 — after 1871), a graduate of the Naval Cadet Corps, midshipman, college assessor, according to Engel’s will, received the estate of Zakhody Rechitsa Uyezd , where he was the county leader of the nobility (1851).
