He received his primary musical education under the guidance of his grandfather, violinist and violin master. Since 1865, he studied in Montreal with Jules She , while he himself began to give lessons. In 1869, for several months, he took lessons in Liege from Desiree Heinberg , receiving a diploma from the Liege Conservatory . Then in 1875 he returned to Europe to study with Delfin Alard , Henri Vyotan and Hubert Leonard . Finally, in 1878-1879. Martel lived and worked in Europe for the third time, this time as a violinist in the Paris Théâtre lyrique orchestra. After his final return to the New World, he published a series of articles on the latest musical art and won widespread recognition by the Canadian press as a soloist. In 1896 he began his teaching career, from 1905 he taught in Chicago. Died in an accident, poisoning due to a leak of domestic gas.
Martel's stepdaughter, Ortans Leduc, in the early 1880s was a promising opera singer and, for a short time, the second wife of another major Canadian violinist, Franz Jeen-Prüm .
