Biography
Alfred Roller studied architecture and painting at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, was a student of Christian Gripenkerl .
In 1897, together with Gustav Klimt , Josef Maria Olbrich , Koloman Moser , Josef Hofmann, he became one of the founders, and in 1902 he became president of the Austrian artists group - Vienna Secession . Since 1899, he was a professor in the drawing class at the Vienna School of Art and Industry (Kunstgewerbeschule) , and then became its director.
In 1903, composer and conductor Gustav Mahler invited Roller to the Vienna Pryvstroy opera for the position of chief artist, who turned out to be vacant after the departure of Heinrich Lefler [1] . His work with Mahler brought revolutionary changes to the opera house.
Shortly after Mahler left, Roller left the Court Opera; since 1909 he was the director of the Vienna School of Art and Industry [1] . In 1911, he returned to work in the theater, staged performances in Dresden and at the Salzburg Festival , in recent years he again worked at the Vienna Opera [1] .
Creativity
At the beginning of his creative career, Roller was actively engaged in the field of graphic design and graphics. He created numerous covers and vignettes for periodicals, as well as posters for the fourth, fourteenth and sixteenth exhibitions of the Secession . He also designed the layout of the exhibitions themselves and was a participant in them.
Together with other modernist artists he created the magazine Ver Sacrum , which was engaged in the wide dissemination of their ideas.
The author of a number of posters , bookplates , illustrations and paintings. Designed an original secession font .
