Biography
Stefano Sommier was born on May 20, 1848 in Florence in a French family. In 1869, he accepted Italian citizenship. Since 1870, he studied the flora of Italy, traveled through the Tuscan archipelago , Sardinia , Sicily , Lampedusa , Linos and Pantelleria , as well as mainland Italy ( Abruzzo ). In 1887, he visited the Crimea and the Caucasus . In 1878 and 1884, Somme traveled to Norway . Between these two trips to the north, he traveled to Siberia , Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan .
In 1888, Somme took part in the creation of the Italian Botanical Society. For 8 years, he led this organization.
Then Stefano Sommier together with another Franco-Italian botanist Emilio Levier again went to the Caucasus. Returning to Italy, Levy and Somme explored the flora of Greece and Turkey . In 1907, Somme went on his last expedition to Malta .
In 1907, Uppsala University awarded Stefano Sommier the honorary doctorate in medicine ( doctor medicinae honoris causa ).
Carlo Pietro Stefano Somme died on January 3, 1922 .
