They are found in the tropical regions of Central and South America and partly on the Caribbean islands. Occupy various habitats, live both in forests and in meadows.
They reach a body length of 5-10 cm and a weight of 10 to 85 grams. Their fur is brown or gray on top, the bottom is light. Some species on the face have light streaks. The tail is missing. The ears are pointed.
Lead a nocturnal lifestyle. During the day they hide in caves, houses and other shelters. Most species live in large groups. The diet is mainly fruit, in addition, they also eat pollen and insects.
In Jamaican leafy trees, the gestation period usually lasts 112-120 days, but at rest, the period can be extended to 180 days. As a rule, one cub is born. Lactation lasts approximately two months. Puberty is achieved in eight to twelve months. In captivity, these animals can live for more than ten years.
