According to the United States Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 598 km², of which 344 km² is land and 254 km² or 42.4% are water bodies.

Demographics
According to the 2000 census [1] , 11,567 residents of 5,004 households and 3,412 families live in the okrug. The population density is 34 people per km². There are 6,498 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of 19 buildings per km². Racial composition of the population: white - 69.95%, African Americans - 28.88%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.14%, Asians - 0.34%, Hawaiians - 0.06%, representatives of other races - 0.10 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.54%. Hispanics accounted for 0.61% of the population.
Of the total number of households , 21.20% are children under the age of 18 years, 54.70% of households are married couples living together, 11.10% of households are single women without a spouse, 31.80% of households households are not related to families, 28.70% of households consist of one person, 16.80% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older), living alone. The average household size is 2.23 people and the average family size is 2.71 people.
The age structure of the district: 19.00% under the age of 18, 5.00% from 18 to 24, 19.60% from 25 to 44, 28.00% from 45 to 64, and 28.50% from 65 and older. The average age of a resident of the district is 50 years. For every 100 females there are 86.80 males. For every 100 females over 18 years of age, there are 81.50 males.
