Biography

Born in the rich and famous family of the city of Oldenburg. In 1855 he went to Vienna to study at the private school of drawing by Karl Rahl .

Gripenkirl’s first painting, Oedipus and Antigone , was approved by the Royal Academy of Painting. In this regard, Gripenkerl, along with other students of C. Rahl and under his leadership, was entrusted with the creation of picturesque frescoes for the main staircase of the Armory Museum (now the Military History Museum ), as well as the Todesko Palace and the Viennese Palace of the von Sin Family.

After Professor Rahl's death in 1865, Gripenkerl continued and completed the unfinished work of his teacher.

In 1874 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where, beginning in 1877, he headed a special workshop of historical painting.

Christian Gripenkerl is an artist who has created a number of paintings on historical subjects and themes from ancient mythology. Portraitist.

He brought up a whole generation of famous Viennese artists, among his students: Karl Moll (1880–81), Alfred Roller , Stanislav Reikhan (1877), Max Kurzweil , Karl Otto Česká (1894–99), Richard Gerstl (1898–99), Heinrich Knirr , Egon Schiele (1906–08), Imre Reves , Koloman Moser (1889–1890) and Anton Feistauer (1906–09), etc.

His conservative views on art led to repeated protests from students, and in 1909 a group of his students created, including Egon Schiele , Anton Kolig , Anton Feistauer and others, the Neukunstgruppe association, whose goal was to fight with conservatism in painting.

Christian Gripenkerl was a demanding and demanding teacher. So, who constantly entered into disputes with him because of the manner of writing to Richard Gerstl , he once said: “I confidently drive a stream of urine through the snow than you draw” [1] .

Gripenkerl also became famous for having failed twice in the entrance exams to the young Adolf Hitler at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts . In 1907, when Hitler was supposed to prepare samples of his drawings, the professor disapprovedly noted that “The samples of drawings are unsatisfactory. They have too many heads. ”In 1908, his verdict was even clearer:“ Not allowed. ”

He was buried in an honorary grave at the Central Cemetery of Vienna.
