Production
ABC ordered the filming of an unnamed series, developed by award-winning screenwriters David O. Russell and Suzanne Grant , from thirteen episodes on January 22, 2014, bypassing the pilot production phase [2] [3] . Production began with ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios, while Russell, Grant, Karl Beverly and Sarah Timberman took over as executive producers. [3] Suzanne Grant, meanwhile, was the screenwriter of the first episode. [3] The concept itself was described as a modern soap opera about the rich and the poor, in the style of the classic drama “ Up and Down the Stairs ”, which focuses on the prestigious country club, where the elite rest and the poor work, around which the action of the story unfolds [2] [4] .
February 26, 2014, a month after ordering the series, David O. Russell left the post of executive producer, according to statements in the press due to creative differences in the script with Susanna Grant, who is the author of the pilot episode [5] [6] [7] . At the same time, the series acquired the name “Club” and casting of actors for the main roles began. Young actress Callie Hernandez was the first to join the project as one of the club’s employees, who secretly steals money from accounts [5] . Next, another aspiring actor received a regular role in the series, Chris Conroy, in the role of a wealthy heir [8] . On March 24, Betsy Brandt joined in as the wife of one of the club's owners [9] , and a day later it was announced that Maria Canels-Barrera would play the club's manager [10] . Boris Kojo two days later joined the show as a famous football player [11] . Casting was soon stopped and the project was sent for processing; as a result, bypassing the news of the May channel upfront , it remained frozen [12] . In July, production was resumed, and casting continued. Luke Mitchell and Jamie Lee Kirchner joined the show starring the new collaborator and Deacon’s wife, respectively [13] . Michael Landis was then approved for one of the leading male roles, a widower and father of two children [14] . On August 4, it was announced that Natalie Zia had signed up for the lead role in the project [15] . A month later, it was announced that John Stamios would play the role of her millionaire husband [16] .
