Duke Wilhelm of Mecklenburg ( German Wilhelm zu Mecklenburg , full name Friedrich Wilhelm Nicholas , German Friedrich Wilhelm Nicolas ; March 5, 1827 , Ludwigslust - July 28, 1879 , Heidelberg ) - member of the Grand Ducal family of Mecklenburg-Schwerin , Prussian officer.

Biography
Duke Wilhelm is the third child and second son of the Grand Duke Paul Friedrich and his wife Alexandrina of Prussia . He joined the Prussian army as an officer. On December 9, 1865, he married his cousin Alexandrina , daughter of the Prussian prince Albrecht and Marianne of Orange, Nassau . They had a daughter Charlotte (1868-1944). In the court circles of Berlin, Wilhelm was known as a passionate player, a woman lover, and a loaf and received the nickname "Prince Schnapps." [3] On August 29, 1848 he was awarded the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. [4]
In the Austro-Prussian-Italian War, William with the rank of Major General commanded a light cavalry brigade. During the Franco-Prussian War , already being a lieutenant general , he commanded the 6th Cavalry Division and was injured in the explosion of the citadel in Lana on September 9, 1870. He retired in 1875 with the rank of general. He died on the operating table in Heidelberg . His body, accompanied by the nephew of Duke Paul Friedrich of Mecklenburg, was brought to Schwerin and buried on August 2 in the Schwerin Cathedral .
