Stanford Solomon Penner ( Eng. Stanford Solomon Penner , July 5, 1921, Unna , Germany) - American scientist, professor of engineering physics and director of the Center for Energy and Combustion Research at the University of California , San Diego. Known for his research on combustion, applied spectroscopy and thermophysics.

Biography
Penner (he had the friendly nickname “Sol”) came to the United States in 1936, in 1943 he received American citizenship. At Union College in Schenectady , New York, received a bachelor's degree in chemistry (1942), received a master's degree (1943) from the University of Wisconsin , and then a doctorate degree in physical chemistry (1946). Penner’s scientific advisers are T. von Karman and F. Daniels . The thesis was interrupted for some time in 1944-45, when he worked in a ballistic laboratory for military orders.
From 1947 to 1964, he worked at the California Institute of Technology , first as a senior research fellow at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, then as a professor. From 1962 to 1964 - Director of the Research and Development Division of the Institute for Defense Analysis in Washington, DC. In 1964, he began working with the University of California, San Diego, where he was the organizer of the department of the Faculty of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. He was a professor of mechanical engineering until his retirement in 1991, was also deputy dean for academic affairs (1968–1969), director of the Institute of Pure and Applied Physics (1968–1971), and director of the Center for Energy and Combustion Research (1974–1990).
