He was a pastor, later a member of the highest Presbyterian church institution in Scotland; in 1764 made by the royal historian of Scotland.
A friend of Hume and Gibbon , a zealous Presbyterian , Robertson was a supporter of the existing state system, but in each case he defended freedom of conscience and speech and advocated the emancipation of Catholics . Honorary Member of St. Petersburg. AN c January 30, 1783.
Of the historical works of Robertson, distinguished by a clear and impartial presentation (collected and published, with a biography of the author, in 1820), the following are remarkable:
- “History of Scotland during the reigns of Queen Mary and King James VI” (London, 1759),
- “History of the reign of the emperor Charles V” (London, 1769; in Russian, translated from the French edition under the title: “History of the Emperor Charles V's Statehood, etc.,” St. Petersburg, 1775),
- "History of America" (London, 1777).
Modern criticism reproached Robertson for prejudice against Mary Stuart in the first of these works and in an excessive disposition to the Spaniards in the third.
