He was a conservative in the cabinet of antiquities and medals at the Paris Library , where he lectured in archeology, and was an indispensable secretary of the Paris Academy of Arts . His research concerned partly the new history of various peoples and states, partly the history of ancient art, and was based both on a critical study of printed materials and museum monuments, as well as on Rochette's own research and discoveries during his travels to Italy, Sicily, Greece and Germany.
