According to the US Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 1,992 km², of which 1,950 km² is land and 41 km², or 2.1% is water.

According to the 2000 census [1] , there are 60,371 residents in the district, consisting of 23,838 households and 18,164 families . The population density is 31 people per km². There are 26,841 residential buildings on the territory of the district, with a building density of 14 buildings per km². The racial composition of the population: whites - 92.18%, African Americans - 6.24%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.20%, Asians - 0.43%, Hawaiians - 0.01%, representatives of other races - 0.20 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.74%. Hispanic was 0.74% of the population.
32.50% of the total number of households are children under the age of 18, 65.40% of households are married couples living together, 7.50% of households are single women without a spouse, 23.80% of households households are not related to families, 20.20% of households consist of one person, 7.30% of households consist of elderly (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.52 people, and the average family size is 2.89 people.
