History

This territory was first called Henrico Division , and then renamed the "district". It got its name from the village of Henricus , which was founded in 1611 by Sir Thomas Dale and destroyed by the Indians during the Jamestown massacre of 1622. This village, Cape Henry and Henraiko County got their name in honor of Heinrich Frederick Stewart, Prince of Wales , the eldest son of King James I.

In 1634, the king ordered the colony to be divided into 8 shirs or counties. One of them was Henraiko County. Initially, this district was located on both banks of the James River. From this territory 10 separate districts subsequently stood out.

During the Civil War, residents of Henraiko County served in the Confederate Army. Of these, the 1st Virginia Infantry Regiment , the 15th Virginia Infantry Regiment , and several other companies were almost completely recruited:

  • Company G of the 12th Virgin Infantry Regiment
  • Company N 23rd Virginia Infantry Regiment
  • Company E 44th Virginia Infantry Regiment
  • Company E of the 53rd Virgin Infantry Regiment

In 1862, several major campaign battles on the peninsula took place on the territory of the district: the Battle of Seven Pines , the Battle of Glendale and the Battle of Malvern Hill . In 1864, the Battle of Yellow Tavern took place here, as well as many battles during the siege of Petersbeg .
