Life

A direct descendant of the first Duke of Luin , inherited a large fortune of his ancestors. In his youth, accompanied by his cousin, Montmorency made a grand tour of Italy, during which he organized the excavations of ancient Metapont . At 28, he was elected to the Academy of Inscriptions . Honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy from 12.22.1856.

During the July monarchy, he refused, as a legitimist , to take a seat in the House of Peers; was a member of the constituent and legislative meetings. During the coup on December 2, he was arrested among the deputies gathered in the city hall of the 10th district to protest against the dissolution of the meeting, but was soon released. Since then, he no longer took part in public life.

A fan of academism in painting, he also studied metallurgy and chemistry . He tried to uncover the secret of damask steel , collected eastern weapons. In 1864 he made a trip to the Middle East for archaeological research, and he was one of the first Europeans to visit Petra .

In the 1840s the duke undertook the reconstruction of the family estate of Dampierre , to decorate which he ordered the Engra paired frescoes "Golden Age" and "Iron Age" (were not executed). He collected antique coins, medallions, cameos and vases. In 1854, he was entrusted with the leadership of compiling the catalog of the National Library .

He bequeathed his collection of antiquities to the Cabinet of Coins . From it all subsequent Albers descend .

In 1856, he became the organizer and sponsor of an international competition for the invention of the most convenient technology for duplicating photographs using printing methods with a prize pool of 10,000 francs [4] .
