About the album
Soulsavers as part of music producers Rich Machin and Ian Glover debuted in 2003 with the release of the album Tough Guys Don't Dance [1] . Over the next five years, the duo for the most part was engaged in the creation of remixes for such groups as Starsailor and Doves [1] . In 2007, Soulsavers was involved in the creation of a joint album of Mark Lanegan [2] .
The musician co-authored a number of songs, recorded the main vocals for five compositions and shared a microphone with guest performers in three more [1] . The record included six original songs, cover versions of Spiritual by Spain , Through My Sails by Neil Young and No Expectations by The Rolling Stones , as well as a revised version of Kingdoms of Rain from Mark Lanegan's album Whiskey for the Holy Ghost [3] .
Reviews
The collaboration of Soulsavers and Lanegan has undoubtedly benefited both parties; the latter - in particular: it was Machin and Glover who revealed the tenderness and tattered grace in the vocals of their guest [2] [4] . As a result, the British with the help of baritone Mark “two packs a day” presented the audience with an amazingly atmospheric album with a genre palette from electro-noir (“Arizona Bay”) to gospel (“Revival”) [1] [5] .
The silent despair performed by Spiritual and the ragged threat of Ghosts of You and Me are among the best recordings of “partly Johnny Cash and partly Tom Waits ” ontoday ; these songs are so strong that it is impossible to imagine them as impressive with some other vocalist [2] [3] . The skillful and thoughtful handling of the songs of Spain, The Rolling Stones and Neil Young complements It's Not How Far You Fall, It's the Way You Land with three touchingly beautiful cover versions [3] [4] . The final track - a rethinking of "No Expectations" - is staggering like a magnificent blessing of Leonard Cohen , and after the end of the record it rings for a long time in your ears [6] [3] .
