World Ski Championship 1966

The 19th alpine skiing world championship was held from August 4 to 14, 1966 in Portillo , Chile . The championship was a triumph of the French athletes, they won 14 of 16 gold and silver medals.

Initially, Erik Schinegger from Austria won the gold in women's downhill among women, but in 1967 she failed the gender test and was disqualified. Soon after, Erica underwent a sex change operation and began to bear the name Eric Schinegger. In 1988, during a television show, Eric returned the gold medal from Portillo to Frenchwoman Mariel Guashel, who finished second.
