At the end of the course in 1803 at the Polytechnic School, he entered the marine engineers. His first and most outstanding work in mathematics was a memoir presented to the Academy in 1813, "Développement de géométrie pour faire suite à la géométrie pratique de Monge"; when considering questions on the curvature of surfaces, he suggested using the properties of a certain curve, which he called an indicatrix , which led to many significant simplifications and new conclusions. Here he proved the theorem on the intersection of systems of mutually perpendicular surfaces along the so-called "curvature lines." For this work he was elected in 1818 a member of the French Academy of Sciences .
However, in the future he devoted himself mainly to statistical and economic research and the application of mathematics to industrial goals. So, in the years 1820-1824. he published Voyage en Grande Bretagne de 1816-19, in which he set forth his own research on trade and industry in England, and in 1825-27. printed “Géométrie et mécanique des arts et des métiers et des beaux arts”, etc.
He was a professor at the Conservatoire des Arts et des Métiers. Honorary Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences 12/20/1826.
Repeatedly sat in legislative assemblies; briefly served as Minister of the Sea (November 10-18, 1834). Under Napoleon III he was a senator. As an economist, he advocated protectionism .
With extensive abilities and hard work, Dupin did not leave behind any scattered traces in his studies, except for the work on geometry indicated above. In 1822 he published a book entitled "Applications de géométrie et de mécanique à la marine, aux ponts et chaussées, etc. (pour faire suite aux développements de géométrie) ”, which, among other things, sets out the geometric theory of stability of equilibrium of floating bodies , representing an exemplary product in simplicity and clarity; Until the beginning of the 20th century, no one was able to give the theory of stability of floating bodies in a simpler form than that of Dupin.
