Johann Matthias Gesner ( German: Johann Matthias Gesner ; April 9, 1691 ; Roth - August 3, 1761 , Göttingen ) is a German philologist.

Since 1734 he was a professor of eloquence in Göttingen, where he founded the first Philological Seminary. Through his publications of ancient authors: Pliny , Quintilian , Horace and Claudiana (under the general title "Scriptores de republica") and his essay "Primae lineae isagoges in eruditionem universam" (Lpts., 1784) contributed to the fact that ancient authors began to study not only in philologically.
Faberovsky also published Thesaurus eruditionis scholasticae and a new dictionary: Novus linguae et eruditionis romanae-thesaurus, intended for the scientific study of the Latin language. He also appeared: Opuscula varii argumenti (1743–45) and Thesaurus epistolarum Gesneri (Halle, 1768) and others. Honorary member of St. Petersburg. AN c 03/05/1764.
