History
In 1863, the winemaker Jean-Baptiste Camus created an association of winemakers for the production and sale of high-quality cognac under the brand name La Grande Marque . He later bought shares from his partners and renamed the company Camus - la Grande Marque .
His son Gaston brought Camus to the export market and, among other things, became an official supplier of cognac to the imperial court of Russia. In the 1960s, a third-generation representative of Camus, Michel, began a profitable business in the nascent duty-free market by introducing exclusive gift vials of Limoges porcelain and baccarat crystal. Jean-Paul Camus, representative of the fourth generation of the family, began an extensive program to ensure production of raw materials by expanding vineyards, building distilleries and cellars for aging cognac. At the same time, he brought Camus to market leadership in Korea and Japan . In 2000, he launched the production of Borderies XO cognac based on millesimino cognac from the Borderi subregion.
In 2003, Cyril Camus became president of the company. He created a new generation of cognacs, including the Elegance, Masterpiece, Rarissima and Ile de Re collections.
Winegrower Family
The Cognac region has been protected by French legislation on regional appellations since 1936 and is divided into six subregional production zones, depending on their soil characteristics. Borderies (Borderi) is the smallest of these areas, giving only 5% of all regulated cognac products [2] .
Jean-Paul Camus
In the Camus family of winegrowers, traditions associated with land, wine and a bunch of grapes are handed down from father to son from 1863 to the present. The ancestral home of Camus - Plessis Castle - is located in the center of the Bordery subregion in the middle of vineyards. To date, the Camus family owns 180 hectares in the Bordery area. This is the largest property in this subregion.
Camus Cognac Character
Cognac Camus are notable for their low tannin content, pronounced aroma and velvety.
Distillation is a decisive moment for giving cognac a refined aroma. Both stages of distillation take place in a 2500-liter Charente distillation cube, which allows the best ratio of heating / wine / copper surface. Most Camus cognacs are distilled on the lees in order to better show the typical characteristics of each cognac spirit and subregion. In order to maximize the potential flavor of the future cognac, the first 18 liters of brandy alcohol obtained after the second stage of distillation are selected and tested individually.
After distillation, the Assembler selects cognac spirits that have the richest and most delicate aroma, as well as the taste associated with Camus cognacs, to make a blend. To preserve the unique tenderness of the drink and preserve its aromatic qualities, Camus cognacs are aged in oak barrels with a low content of tannin.
