According to the United States Census Bureau , the county’s total area is 740 km², of which 666 km² are land and 75 km² or 10.1% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , 9,989 residents of 3,995 households and 2,740 families live in the okrug. The population density is 15 people per km². There are 4,926 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of 7 buildings per km². Racial composition of the population: white - 57.96%, African Americans - 39.04%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.55%, Asians - 0.81%, Hawaiians - 0.03%, representatives of other races - 0.32 %, representatives of two or more races - 1.28%. Hispanics accounted for 0.72% of the population, regardless of race .
Out of the total number of households , 28.00% are children under the age of 18, 50.70% of households are married couples living together, 14.00% of households are single women without a spouse, 31.40% of households households are not related to families , 26.10% of households consist of one person, 11.30% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.46 people and the average family size is 2.95 people.
The age structure of the district: 22.90% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 25.70% from 45 to 64, and 17.30% from 65 and older.
