The election process
In the election race, each party nominates two candidates who are elected together by direct vote. The party of candidates who took the second place by the number of votes in the state or in the federal district of Mexico City appoints the senator in third place, in accordance with the list of candidates registered with the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE).
Senators are elected for six years at the same time as the President of Mexico . Extraordinary elections are rare, as the Senate is completely renewed every six years, and senators are not subject to direct re-election.
Candidate Requirements
According to the Constitution of Mexico, senators are representatives of the people. The candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Be a native Mexican citizen who has reached the age of 25 and is eligible to vote.
- One and the same person cannot simultaneously be a member of the Senate and an acting member of the Supreme Court; a member of the Senate and the current Secretary of State or an assistant to the Secretary of State; a member of the Senate and an active clergyman.
- A candidate for the position of Senator at the time of election cannot serve in the army, be an active member of the police or gendarmerie.
Working Committees
Senators are members of working committees and commissions dealing with specific issues. Committees are the main organs of the chamber involved in the legislative process. Each senator is a member of three different committees, and each committee elects a Chair and two secretaries to coordinate its work.
Terms of office
In Spanish , it is customary to designate each term of office of the Senate in Roman numerals .
The current session (from 2012 to 2015) is 62 ( Spanish LXII Legislatura ).
The term of office of the Senate is equal to the two terms of office of the House of Representatives. Thus, the 2012 Senate will operate during the 62 and 63 working sessions of the House of Representatives.
Senate Functions
In addition to the implementation of the main legislative functions, the Senate considers the President’s proposals regarding the following candidates:
- Judges of the Supreme Court
- Prosecutor General of the Republic
