History

The Yoshioka-ryu school was founded around 1532 ( Sengoku period ) by the fencing master Yoshioka Kempo, a member of the famous Yoshioka clan [1] . Initially, the creator of the school worked as a simple dyer, and his family was famous for a special method of obtaining a uniform blue tone. Later, he began to master the techniques of kenjutsu , and then founded his own style, which became part of Kyo-hachi-ryu ( 京 八 «," 8 schools of the capital ") [2] . Yoshioka Kempo was known for his swordsman skills, and for this reason became the official instructor of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshiharu [3] .

One story says that Yoshioka suffered a stick strike from one of the theater’s actors, but during a performance at the shogun’s castle, after which he humbledly left the stage. The shame that he could not protect himself from the accidental attack of the actor was too great for a sword master and shogun instructor. Therefore, Kempo soon returned and killed the actor in public with a sword, which he illegally brought into the castle under his clothes. Since the use of weapons of any kind was strictly prohibited under pain of judgment and death, Yoshioka was declared a criminal. Before Kempo was killed, he took the life of many of his persecutors [3] .

However, Yoshioka created a solid foundation for one of the most famous kenjutsu schools in Kyoto , over which his children and grandchildren took over. But despite this, the Yoshioka-ryu school lasted only 4 generations.

Once the shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru held a comparative battle between Yoshioka and Shinman Munisai (father of Miyamoto Musashi ), in which the latter won with a score of 2: 1 [2] . This battle caused fierce hostility between the two families. Just one generation later, Miyamoto Musashi again defeated the representatives of Yoshioka-ryu - Yoshioku Seijuro ( Jap. 吉岡 清 十郎 ) and Yoshioku Densichiro ( Jap. 吉岡 伝 七郎 ). And the murder of Yoshioka Matashichiro ( 吉岡 又 三郎 三郎 ) ended the feud and led to the demise of the Yoshioka-ryu school [1] . In 1614, members of the Yoshioka family participated in the battle for the Osaka Castle , after which they closed the school and went into textile business [4] .
