The species is common in Brazil (the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul ), as well as in eastern Uruguay . It lives in wetlands, in ravines between hills, inhabits meadows and edges. Pregnancy lasts more than two months, after which one or two babies are born.
The main threats to the species are the burning of vegetation in order to establish pastures for cattle. It occurs in at least one conservation area in Uruguay (Laguna de Castillos) and in at least four in Brazil.
