Geography
Conchon is located 233.5 km south of Ho Chi Minh City , 1372.5 km south of Hanoi . It has a volcanic origin. Pretty mountainous. The highest point is Mount of the Holy Cross (610 m).
On the slopes of the mountains, tropical forests are preserved, in which birds and reptiles live mainly. There is an endemic species of lizard. Sea turtles breed on the shores. In 1984, a national park was created to protect them.
History
Conshon Island in the past was known as Pulo-Condor [2] (literally “secret island”), which formally was part of the Khmer state , but was more often visited by the Thyam , Vietnamese and Malay sailors. At the beginning of the XVIII century, the British unsuccessfully tried to colonize him. Subsequently, Conson became part of Vietnam. In the years 1862-1956 was controlled by France. A prison was built at Conchon, closed only in 1973 (about 8,000 prisoners were released).
Infrastructure
Most of the population lives in the city of Condao, near which the airport operates. The entire territory of the island is well-telephoned. The main industry is tourism.
