Geography
The city is located on the Sanokhta River, 69 km northeast of Nizhny Novgorod .
History
It arose at the beginning of the XVII century as a settlement of Old Believers , first mentioned in 1644 as the village of Semenovskoe , in 1717 - the village of Semenovo . Since 1779 - the county town of Semenov district of the Nizhny Novgorod governorate (since 1796 - the Nizhny Novgorod province ).
Carved spoon-buckwheat spoons and “wood chips” (trays, cups, bowls , etc.) were brought to Semenov from neighboring villages, which, after finishing and painting, were sent to the Nizhny Novgorod Fair .
In the XIX - early XX centuries - the center of the Old Believers, the only place in Russia where leather ladders-rosaries for the Old Believers were made. [five]
Heraldry
The first coat of arms of the city of Semenov was approved on August 16, 1781 [6] .
The coat of arms of the Semenovsky district was approved on February 16, 2012.
The coat of arms is a heraldic shield bordered by a red stripe, consisting of two parts: in the upper part there is a “scarlet (red) deer walking in a silver field with six horns and black hooves”, indicating that it belongs to the Nizhny Novgorod region , on the territory of which the city of Semenov is located; in the lower part there is a bonfire made of logs stacked in a pyramid on a golden field, which means the great importance of forests and woodworking in the life of the population. The dividing strip between the red fields with the Khokhloma painting element in gold color, confirming the historical, cultural and economic significance of the craft [7] .
