Biography
Edmond Fremy was born on February 28, 1814 in the city of Versailles. Initially, he worked under the guidance of his father, Francois Fremy, a professor of chemistry at the Saint-Serian military school, in 1839 he became an assistant to Gay-Lussac , in 1842 he was appointed extraordinary professor of the Natural History Museum. In 1846, he occupied the department of chemistry at the Polytechnic School, and from 1850 to 1892 he was an ordinary professor in the Natural History Museum, at the same time holding the post of director of it.
In 1864, he established in the museum, with the assistance of Chevrolet , the first free chemical laboratory for scientific research, which attracted a huge number of students. He discovered metasimic acid , ammonia compounds of cobalt, palmitic acid , olein and a method for producing artificial gemstones , the predecessor of the Verneuil method .
His other works concern the study of tartaric and lactic acids, pectin, cellulose , chlorophyll , and the composition of bones, protein, and muscles. He also owes the discovery of saponification of fats with sulfuric acid for the preparation of stearin and a number of other important discoveries in the production of glass, cement, iron, steel, artificial fertilizer and so on.
Together with Edmond Becquerel, he discovered that ozone is an allotropy of oxygen. Member of the French Academy of Sciences (1857), corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences from 07.12.1856 in the department of physical and mathematical sciences (category of chemistry).
