Biography and Activity

The son of one of the secretaries of the Prime Minister Choiseul . He was intended for the clergy, but under the influence of revolutionary ideas, he abandoned his spiritual career and chose journalism [4] .

In 1800, he and his brother purchased from the typographer Baudoin the right to publish the Journal des Débats et des Décrets (a newspaper of political and literary debates ) that had existed since 1789, which he edited as the Journal des Débats . It was one of the few newspapers that continued to exist after the coup of 18 Brumaire . No matter how skillfully the royalist tendency of the newspaper was hiding between the lines, she did not fail to arouse Napoleon’s government against herself, and when the latter declared himself emperor (May 18, 1804), Bertin’s newspaper had to change its name to “ Journal de l'Empire "(The Empire's newspaper) and become obedient to the echo of the official" Moniteur ". In 1814, Bertin returned his original name to his newspaper and openly took the side of the royalists, for which, during the Hundred days, the newspaper was taken from him and given to a more malleable journalist. [four]

During the Restoration period, the newspaper was a reliable support of the government, up to the transition of Chateaubriand to the opposition, which also carried away the Journal des Débats. Then Bertin maintained in his newspaper the moderate government of Martignac (1828–1829), but after the latter’s resignation, he again went into opposition and attacked the last ministry of the old monarchy . When the revolution (1830) triumphed, Bertin began to support the new dynasty , although he always maintained a certain independence. [four]

Bertin passed away in 1841.

Family

The sons Arman (1801-1854) and Edward (1797-1871) after the death of his father continued his paper publishing business. Daughter Louise (1805–1877) is a composer and poetess.
