History
Raw diamond was mined in 2010 in the kimberlite mines of the Republic of South Africa . The stone was cut by a large diamond-processing company in the USA, Cora International LLC, NY, which spent about six months choosing the right shape and filigree embodiment of the plan. After receiving the diamond, the company applied for an expert opinion at the ( GIA ), widely known for the development and support of the reference system for evaluating diamonds.
The analysis established the age of the stone at least 1 billion years; a rare bright yellow color is due to the high content of bound nitrogen molecules in the diamond crystal structure; however, they are distributed so evenly that the transparency of the stone is close to ideal. The probability of such a uniform distribution of foreign inclusions with such an impressive size of diamond is negligible, which makes it extremely rare [4] . The diamond has been certified as "fancy" - that is, of the highest category - in color and purity, and as the largest bright yellow pear-shaped diamond in the world. Experts also called the approximate value of a diamond - from 11 to 15 million dollars [5] .
As a pre-sale preparation in February 2011, the “young” gem briefly became an exhibit of the Museum of Natural History in London, where it was exhibited along with the Pyramid of Hope, a unique collection of 296 colored diamonds collected through the efforts of Aurora Gems Corporation [6] [7 ] ] , - and already on November 15, 2011, the diamond was sold at an auction in the Geneva branch of the Sotheby's auction house to an anonymous telephone buyer for $ 12.4 million , of which 1.5 million were auction fees. Some commentators noted that the selling price was 100 thousand dollars below the lower threshold of 11 million dollars, set by preliminary estimates by GIA experts, but even so, representatives of Sotheby’s claimed that the “Drop of the Sun” lot set an absolute price record in the calculation per carat of yellow diamonds [8] .
