Vinotonus

Vinotonus is a deity from Celtic mythology , about which very little information has been preserved.

Only seven altars dedicated to Vinotonus were found, all located in Yorkshire Moors. It is possible that Vinotonus, which is characteristic of Celtic mythology as a whole, was the local deity of Yorkshire . His name may mean "god of the vineyards", and perhaps he was worshiped from ancient times until the fifth century AD.

The Romans considered Vinotonus equivalent to Sylvanas and the god of the wilderness. It was common practice for the Romans to endow the local Celtic deities with the functions and names of popular Roman gods. Sylvanas was also identified with the Celtic god Callirius, about whom, like Vinotonus, there is little information. It is possible that many local Celtic natural deities were united by the Romans under the name Sylvanas, as was the case with Vinotonus [1] .
