Alfred Nzo location on the map
It is located in the northeast of the province, extends from the Dragon Mountains , bordered in the north by Lesotho , in the northeast - with the Sisonke region of Kwazulu-Natal province and the OR-Tambo region in the south.
The total population of the Alfred Nzo region as a result of recent territorial transformations is 900,491 inhabitants, the total area has increased from 6,858 km² to 11,119 km².
Alfred Nzo has 4 local municipalities :
- Matatiele (area 4352 km² or 39% of the total area)
- Umzimvubu (area 2506 km² or 23% of the total area)
- Mbizana (area 2806 km² or 25% of the total area)
- Ntabankulu (area 1455 km² or 13% of the total area).
The area is named after Alfred Nzo (1925–2000), a statesman and politician in the Republic of South Africa.
