Biography

Helena Maher was born on October 17, 1937 in the city of Bielsko-Biala . She began to actively engage in luge at the age of eighteen at a local sports club, then she moved to Katowice and joined another club. She made her international debut in 1958, finished seventeenth at the home world championships in Krynica. She achieved her first serious success in 1960 when she won a silver medal at the Polish Championship.

In 1963, at the world championship in Austrian Imst, Maher closed the top ten. A year later, she was a bronze medalist of the national championship and thanks to a series of successful performances she was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck and took part in the first ever Olympic luge competitions. I wanted to compete for medals here, but following the results of four races I showed only the eighth time.

Despite the failure with the Olympics, she remained in the main team of Poland and continued to travel to major international tournaments. So, in 1966 she again received the bronze of the national championship, and in 1967 she won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Königssee and finished 20th at the World Championships in Hammarstrand, Sweden. Later she qualified for the 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble , where she did not quite reach the prize positions, she was in fourth place, losing to bronze medalist German Angelica Dunhaupt in only 0.09 seconds. Shortly after these races, Helena Maher decided to end her sports career.
