The island is conditionally round in shape, its size is approximately 1050 by 850 meters, area - 0.52 km², the highest point - 115 meters above sea level. The nearest land is the Kintyr Peninsula, located 400 meters away. During low tide, from the island to the peninsula, you can go through watts .
From 1449 to 1508 it is mentioned in chronicles under the name Sanct Barre . In 1854, a lighthouse was built at the northern tip of the island, which in 1983 was fully automated [2] . A small house was built near the lighthouse, in which during the Second World War there lived military personnel who guarded nearby Campbeltown from German submarines; now the building is rented to vacationers. Wild sheep, goats and minks live on Davaar.
The island is interesting because the crucified Jesus Christ is painted on the wall of one of its seven caves - this work was done in 1887 by the local artist Archibald McKinnon after he had a dream calling for it. The locals initially decided that God himself did this, and when they learned the real author of the work, they expelled McKinnon from their places. This image was repeatedly subjected to vandalism, always restored (including twice by the author himself); the last act of vandalism was recorded in July 2006, when on top of Jesus was depicted Che Guevara in red and black colors [3] .
From 1964 to the beginning of the 1970s, Davaar stamps were issued [4] [5] : many tourists wished to send their letters from this island. A mail boat forwarded this correspondence to the nearest post office, at Campbeltown, but on the postmark the island of Davaar was listed as the place of departure [6] [7] .
The population of Davaar in 2001 was 2 people in one household, in 2011 there were no permanent residents on the island [8] .
