Biography
Vladimir Merkulov was born on December 28, 1922 in the village of Pogorelovo [1] (now the Orlovsky District of the Oryol Region ). He graduated from eight classes of school. In 1940 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army , in 1941 he graduated from the Armavir military aviation school of pilots. From April 1943 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War [2] .
From April 1943, Junior Lieutenant V.I. Merkulov in the army in the field. By August 1944 he served in the 43rd iap, flew the Yak-7, Yak-1 and Yak-9; until May 1945 - in the 15th iap, flew the Yak-9 and Yak-3. He fought on the North Caucasus, Southern, 4th Ukrainian, 1st and 3rd Belorussian fronts.
By April 1944, the deputy commander of the squadron of the 43rd Fighter Aviation Regiment ( 278th Fighter Division , 3rd Fighter Aviation Corps , 8th Air Army, 4th Ukrainian Front) senior lieutenant V.I. Merkulov completed 195 combat departures, in 82 air battles personally shot down 19 and in a group of 4 enemy aircraft.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 26, 1944, for "courage and heroism shown in air battles with German invaders," Lieutenant Vladimir Merkulov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union [2] .
He continued to fight at the front until Victory. By May 9, 1945, he carried out 321 combat sorties, conducted about 150 air battles, shot down 29 enemy aircraft in person and 4 in the group.
After the war, Merkulov continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1945 he graduated from the courses of squadron commanders, in 1948 - the Higher Courses of the blind and night training, in 1957 - the Air Force Academy . He flew until the mid-1970s on several dozen types of airplanes and helicopters. In 1979, with the rank of Lieutenant General Merkulov was dismissed. Lived in Kiev .
Died November 26, 2003, buried in the Berkovets cemetery of Kiev [2] .
