Biography
Grigory Menshun was born on February 20, 1912 in the village of Tuligolovo (now the Krolevetsky District of the Sumy Region of Ukraine ). After graduating from seven classes of school he worked on the collective farm , was its chairman. In 1932 - 1935 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1941, Menshun was again drafted into the army. In the same year he graduated from the course of junior lieutenants. Since May 1942 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. In battles he was wounded and contused two times [1] .
By October 1943, Senior Lieutenant Gregory Menshun commanded a battalion of the 467th Infantry Regiment of the 81st Infantry Division of the 61st Army of the Central Front . Distinguished during the battle for the Dnieper . On October 1, 1943, the Menshun battalion crossed the Dnieper near the village of Glushets of the Loevsky district of the Gomel region of the Belorussian SSR and took an active part in the battles for the seizure and retention of a bridgehead on its western bank, repelling a large number of German counterattacks [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 15, 1944, for "skilful leadership of the battle, courage and bravery shown during the crossing of the Dnieper and holding the bridgehead on its right bank", Lieutenant Grigori Menshun was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union and awarded the Order of Lenin and medal "Gold Star" for the number 2343 [1] .
After the war, the rank of captain Menshun was transferred to the reserve. He returned to his native village. Died January 11, 1980 [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War , 1st and 2nd degrees, the Red Star , along with a number of medals [1] .
