Biography
Sergey Melnichenko was born on February 14, 1920 in the village of Bloshchintsy (now the Belotserkovsky district of the Kiev region of Ukraine ). After finishing seven classes of the school he worked on a collective farm . In 1940, Melnichenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He graduated from an artillery school at an accelerated rate. Since the beginning of World War II - on its fronts [1] .
By January 1945, Lieutenant Sergey Melnichenko commanded a platoon of fire at the 116th cannon artillery regiment of the 43rd Rifle Corps of the 59th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Poland . On the night of January 30–31, 1945, Melnichenko’s battery as part of an assault group crossed the Oder in the Breslau area and took an active part in the battles to keep the bridgehead on its western shore. The battery repelled a large number of enemy counterattacks, inflicting heavy losses on it: 5 tanks, 1 artillery gun, 3 machine guns, near a company of foot soldiers. In those battles, Melnichenko died. He was buried in the city of Zdzieszowice, Opole Voivodeship of Poland [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 10, 1945, for “the initiative shown in repelling the enemy’s counterattacks, holding the bridgehead, courage, courage and courage,” Lieutenant Sergei Melnichenko was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Orders of Lenin , World War 2 degree and Red Star [1] .
In honor of Melnichenko, a school was named and a bust was installed in his native village, a street in Kiev was named [1] .
