History
The first settlements of people belong to the Neolithic period , the so-called Butmir culture . In the time of the Romans, the place was called Aquae Sulphurae.
The medieval city was part of the Verkhbosna region. Katera , one of the first two Bosnian cities mentioned by Konstantin Bagryanorodny in the treatise On the Management of the Empire , was found on the territory of Iligi. The disciples of Cyril and Methodius founded a church near the stream Vrelo Bosne.
The foundation of the modern city was laid under the Ottoman administration. Then the city got its name from the Turkish ilij , "a place that heals." The houses in the Oriental style built in the XV-XVI centuries, as well as mosques and bridges have survived.
Ilija, like the rest of Bosnia, went through the process of industrialization with the inclusion of Austria-Hungary . There was a train station, a railway, hotels, which made Ilija the most important city after Sarajevo.
