Biography
He studied at the Medici court with the portrait painter Justus Sustermans , then with the painter Vincenzo Dandini .
In May 1673 he moved to Rome , where he studied in the studio of the sculptor Ercole Ferrat , called the Academy of Ferrat under the direction of Ciro Ferri and was considered the best among other Florentine student artists in Rome.
Particularly strong influence on his work had painters Pietro da Cortona and Carlo Maratta . He became a follower of their style, and he was called one of the "Cortoneschi" or Corton's followers.
Although, as an artist, Gabbiani matured late, he became one of the most prominent painters at the Ferrat Academy. In 1678-1679 he traveled to Venice, where he worked in the studio of Sebastian Bombelli .
In 1680, Gabbiani returned to Florence and worked under the patronage of the great Tuscan Prince Ferdinando , the son of Grand Duke Cosimo III of the Medici . In the person of the great Prince of Tuscany Ferdinando Medici Gabbiani found a loyal patron. He painted a portrait of his patron surrounded by musicians (c. 1685, Florence, Palazzo Pitti ). He created the fresco Apotheosis Cosimo il Vecchio on the ceiling of one of the halls of the Villa Medici in Poggio a Caiano .
In 1684 he performed the Annunciation for the Florentine Palazzo Pitti .
Gabbiani was an independent painter. His first important public work was St Francis de Sales in Glory (1685) for the Santi Apostoli Basilica in Florence. In this work, one can see the influence of Maratt in his grandiose composition and the influence of Dandini in the study of figures.
One of the works performed for Ferdinando was a portrait of his sister, Anna Maria Louise Medici (1685, Palazzo Pitti ). During this period, he also painted a portrait group of the Three Musicians and Ferdinando (Florence, Palazzo Pitti ) and the "Group of Court Musicians" (1685-1690, Florence, Uffizi ).
He brought up a number of talented students. Among them were Benedetto Luti , Tommaso Redi and others.
Gabbiani's masterpiece is considered to be his fresco on the ceiling of the Palazzina Meridiana, in the Pitti Palace . This work is the connection of art and science. Salone - this work was called so because he made the Meridian line (a metal strip on the floor and wall), on which time could be determined using a ray of sunlight falling through a hole in the ceiling. Now this hole in the ceiling is closed.
