Friedrich Karl Eduard Erwin zu Leiningen ( German: Friedrich Karl Eduard Erwin Fürst zu Leiningen ; February 13, 1898, Strasbourg , German Empire - August 2, 1946, Saransk , USSR ) - German aristocrat and officer. Since 1939 he became the 6th Prince of Leiningen .

Biography

Origin

Charles's parents were Emich I, the 5th prince of Leninginsky and Princess Theodora of Hohenlohe-Langenburg .

His father, Prince Emich I came from the Leiningen family, his great-grandfather Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Leiningen (3rd prince of Leninengi) was the mother of Queen Victoria . They had one mother - Princess Victoria Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld.

Mother ( Theodora ) came from the princes of the genus Hohenlohe and was a cousin to the wife of Kaiser Wilhelm II - Empress Augusta of Germany (née Princess Schleswig-Holstein-Augustenburg).

Youth

Karl was born in Strasbourg , on the territory of the German Empire. He was the second child and the first son in the family.

Marriage and children

On November 25, 1925, in Coburg, he married his fourth cousin, Princess Maria Kirillovna , whose father, Kirill Vladimirovich , was a cousin to Emperor Nicholas II , and his mother Victoria Fedorovna (nee Victoria Melita) was a cousin to both Emperor Nicholas II and his wife Alexander Fedorovna (nee Princess of Hesse-Darmstadt). In this marriage, 7 children were born:

  • Emich II (October 18, 1926 - October 30, 1991), Prince of Leningen ( Fürst zu Leiningen ), in 1950 married Princess Eilika of Oldenburg (1928–2016); their son Karl-Emich converted to Orthodoxy in 2013 and was nominated by the Russian Monarchist Party as a candidate for the Russian throne (under the name of Nicholas III );
  • Karl (January 2, 1928 - October 28, 1990), in 1957-1968 he was married to Princess Maria Louise of Bulgaria (born 1933);
  • Kira Melita Theodora Maria Victoria Alexandra (July 18, 1930 - September 24, 2005), in 1963-1972 she was married to Prince Andrei Yugoslavsky (1929-1990);
  • Margarita Ileana Victoria (May 9, 1932 - June 16, 1996), since 1951 she was married to Prince Friedrich-Wilhelm von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1924-2010);
  • Mehtilda Alexandra (born January 2, 1936), husband since 1961 Karl Anton Bausher (born 1931).
  • Friedrich Wilhelm Bertold (June 18, 1938-1998), 1st wife in 1960-1962 Karin Evelin Höss (born 1942), 2nd wife since 1971 Helga Eschenbacher (born 1940). He had no children from two marriages.
  • Peter Victor (December 23, 1942 - January 12, 1943).

Leinengen Legacy

On July 18, 1939, after the death of his father, Prince Emich I, Charles became the titular Prince of Leinengen.

War and Death

During World War II, Prince Charles III of Leningen served in the Kriegsmarine . In 1945, was captured by the Soviet troops. August 2, 1946 he died in a prisoner of war camp in Saransk ( Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ). His wife Maria Kirillovna died of a heart attack on October 25, 1951 in Madrid when she was visiting her brother Grand Duke Vladimir Kirillovich.
