The monotype is a group in the classification of yachts , including yachts that are made on the basis of uniform drawings, which ensures the same characteristics.
Standardization of the design minimizes the differences in yachts and ensures a reduction in their cost. The emergence of new composite materials in the 1970s made it possible to mass-produce identical cases at a low price.
The idea to create a monotype belongs to Thomas Middleton of the Irish yacht club Shankill Corinthian Club . In 1887, he proposed a simple yacht design, which was then used by sailors from Ireland, England, India and South America.
The monotypes are the majority of modern small racing yachts, including classes:
- 470
- 49er
- Star
- Laser
- Finn (racing yacht class)
